Discussion of markets and holdings

Market Overview

The emergence of the novel coronavirus and the economic impact of efforts to contain its transmission led to a deep, sharp repricing of risk assets during the first quarter as liquidity concerns emerged across financial markets. The Bloomberg Barclays US Corporate High Yield Index fell nearly 13% during the period;1 though lower-quality issues suffered the most, the dispersion of perfor-mance among credit tiers wasn’t as significant as one might expect given the magnitude of the selloff. While the quarter as a whole was bad for high yield bonds, March was historically so, even if a late-month rally took

Although they recovered to some degree in December, the Antero Resources (AR) bonds underperformed in the fourth quarter due to the low price of domestic natural gas. The company, which operates in the Appalachian Basin, has systematically hedged its commodity exposure while cutting costs and reducing drilling activity.

Discussion of markets and holdings

Market Overview

Solid returns in fourth quarter 2019 capped off what was a remarkable year across fixed income segments. The emergence of the rally in the first quarter of 2019 appeared to have little, if anything, to do with the underlying global economy, as many indicators throughout the year suggested that growth continued to be sluggish, especially in manufacturing. Instead, the market appeared buoyed by central banks’ return to highly accommoda-tive policy, which repressed volatility and supported bond returns across the quality spectrum. Duration won the day, however, as there was a particularly strong bid for long-tenured investment grade issues.

Bonds of Antero Resources (AR), a natural gas producer headquartered in Denver but operating in the Appalachian Basin, have been affected by the steep drop in natural gas prices. In our view, Antero has done a good job of hedging its exposure, and it holds valuable assets, including a sizable portion of its midstream subsidiary.

The author of “Margin of Safety,” a book that can sell for over $1,000, cautions that investing is more than just producing absolute returns: Investing also includes considering the risks associated with returns.

Despite decent 2nd-quarter results, Chesapeake’s stock bounces off 20-year low

Company history and business

Chesapeake Energy (CHK) is a beaten-down U.S.-based energy stock. The company was founded 30 years ago in 1989 and was once one of the largest natural gas producers.
Nowadays, it is in the middle of a restructuring process.

By the Feb. 1 acquisition of the oil-focused WildHorse Resource Development Corp., Chesapeake is shifting towards high-margin oil production.

This transaction cost $4 billion for Chesapeake. Nonetheless, the market values the shares at only $1.29 (market cap is $2.11 billion) at the time of writing. That is a 47% discount to the estimated value of WildHorse.

There’s something racy about a stock selling for less than $10.

Of course, any finance professor will tell you that the absolute price of a stock means nothing. The stock price is a function of how many shares are outstanding. Companies can issue as many shares as they like. So, the odds of making a profit on a $9 stock and a $90 stock should be the same.

One can agree with the professors intellectually and still feel an emotional thrill when speculating in a stock with a single digit price. Often, low-priced stocks are issued by smaller companies. Frequently,

Falling knives are companies whose share prices have fallen more than 59% over the last 12 months. Some investors hold positions in these stocks because they expect impressive returns on of their investments once they rebound.

Investors are also aware that a significant plunge in the market value of the security can indicate financial distress, so they will incur a severe loss if the company goes bankrupt. If investors focus on those falling knives with moderate to low debt-to-equity ratios, they can substantially reduce the risk.

Here are some results from my search.

The guru is buying more of these stocks

Monitoring the portfolios of legendary investors is often a great way to build your watchlist. If you want to follow the stock picks of the very best, Seth Klarman (Trades, Portfolio) is an ideal place to start.

Other investors might urge you to follow a better-known value investor like Warren Buffett (Trades, Portfolio), but monitoring Klarman has a few advantages.

First, he runs a smaller portfolio. Klarman’s Baupost Group only manages $31 billion. Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A)(BRK.B) is worth more than $500 billion.
