These companies have grown their dividends annually for at least the last 20 years

Dividend growth investing is a very popular approach that can fit within the ModernGraham methods. When searching for companies that have grown their dividends annually for at least the last 20 years, only 70 out of over 800 companies covered met this requirement.

Defensive Investors are defined as investors who need to select only the companies that present the least amount of risk. Enterprising Investors, on the other hand, are able to select companies that present a moderate (though still low) amount of risk.

In part 1 of this series on fairly valued midcap investment opportunities, I primarily focused on nondividend-paying growth-oriented midcaps. In part 2 of this series I turned my focus to finding fairly valued dividend-paying midcaps.

However, as I was evaluating dividend-paying midcaps in the Standard & Poor's 400 Midcap Index, it became clear to me that the differences between dividend-paying midcaps were more important than the similarities. Therefore, I have grouped the dividend-paying midcaps I found into three separate offerings focusing on sectors. In this, part 2A, I will be exclusively covering fairly

A review of company's loan portfolio and financials

Cullen/Frost Bankers Inc. (CFR) is down about 42% from its 52-week high of $80. The stock is currently priced at $46.32 per share. Analysts from Barclays and Macquarie have recently downgraded the stock, citing concerns about the bank’s exposure to the energy sector and the Texas economy.

Despite the downgrades, Cullen/Frost Bankers has a number of positive characteristics. The bank has not lost money since at least 1991. I’m not sure when was the last time the firm lost money since the SEC website does not have Cullen/Frost Bankers' 10-Ks before 1991. From the company’s 10-K,

Buying stocks before the ex-dividend date is simple. If you buy a stock before the ex-dividend date and hold them, you will receive the next dividend. Buying high yielding stocks is not a one way strategy to high returns. In addition to high returns, the valuation should be fair. This is the main reason why I screen every day tomorrow’s best ex-dividend stocks by yield and market capitalization. The smart ones look for dividends that are sustainable and likely to grow. The question is, in an uncertain world, how do you determine which dividends are sustainable and likely to grow? Of course, there is no way to know with exact certainty which dividends are sustainable, but there are tell-tale signs that often foretell the future. Let's look at a couple of them. To find these jewels in the rough, there are two very important things the investor must look for. First, dividends are paid in cash. Therefore, if a company is going to pay a dividend it must have cash available. If the company is going to consistently pay and grow its dividend, it must have a vibrant business model
