GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Summit Materials Inc is a top-10 aggregates supplier and top-15 cement producer in the United States. The company has three reportable segments namely West, East, and Cement segment. It generates a majority of its revenue from West Segment.

Summit Materials is a top-10 aggregates supplier and top-15 cement producer in the U.S. Founded as a roll-up strategy in 2009, the company has grown through a very active acquisition strategy. While cement and aggregates constituted about 35% of the firm's revenue in 2017, these higher-margin businesses constituted more than half of gross profit. Summit's downstream businesses and services include asphalt, ready-mix concrete, and paving. While these constitute about 65% of revenue, their lower margins lead to gross profit contribution of less than 50%.

Wallace Weitz Comments on Summit Materials Guru stock highlight
Summit (NYSE:SUM) is a supplier of construction materials, including aggregates, cement, ready mix concrete and asphalt paving mix. Mother Nature has not cooperated this season, postponing otherwise strong (and funded) demand for infrastructure projects. These delays pressured Summit’s volumes and pushed out the translation of otherwise healthy demand into cash flow. We believe investors have overreacted, and we used the recent weakness to build an initial position. Read more...
