UTX’s (NYSE:UTX) first quarter earnings demonstrated strong growth across its businesses as organic revenue grew 8%. Results were particularly strong in the aerospace businesses with 11% organic revenue growth and 12% pro forma operating income growth (including Rockwell Collins’ results in both years). The Rockwell Collins acquisition is off to an excellent start with performance and integration ahead of management’s expectations. While organic revenue growth in the commercial businesses was reasonably strong at 5%, pre-tax operating profit was muted due to cost pressures at Carrier, which the company believes will improve meaningfully over the course of the year. Top buys include 2 companies guru exited during 4th-quarter 2018

Daniel Loeb (Trades, Portfolio), founder of hedge fund Third Point, disclosed this week that his top buys for the first quarter included several companies the firm sold out of during the prior quarter, including United Technologies Inc. (UTX) and Marathon Petroleum Corp. (MPC).

Loeb said in his shareholder letter that the Third Point Offshore Fund gained 8.8% during the quarter, driven by strong activist and constructivist positions including Nestle SA (XSWX:NESN), Baxter International Inc. (BAX), United Technologies and Campbell Soup Co. (CPB).

United Technologies (UTX), another new investment in 2018, is a high-quality industrial conglomerate which owns market-leading businesses with favorable long-term growth trends and recurring cash flows in the aerospace, elevators and HVAC industries. We believe that UTX has one of the most advantaged business portfolios in the multi-industrial sector, as each of its businesses has significant barriers to entry, high switching costs, substantial pricing power and large future growth potential. The company’s multi-year backlog and recurring service contracts both underpin its future growth and moderate UTX’s cyclicality.

After disclosing our investment in February, we met with management and expressed our

We are pleased that the Board of Directors decided to split United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX) (“UTC”) into three separate, focused companies. Unfortunately, the initial announcement caused confusion and created uncertainty about the free cash flow generation of newly-acquired Rockwell Collins. We believe management has largely rectified this by shortening the time to separation and providing better disclosure on Rockwell Collins’s free cash flow generation. We have urged management to quantify the elimination of stranded costs and explore a highly value-creating transaction for Carrier, and believe they are receptive to these suggestions.

Despite the separation announcement, UTC’s sum-of-the-parts discount has

Review and Outlook

Third Point’s Offshore Fund lost -11.9% during the Fourth Quarter, bringing returns for 2018 to -11.3%. This was the fourth time in 24 years that we sustained a loss of over 1% in a calendar year and our second double digit decline. Although our performance was disappointing, we took the opportunity to learn from our mistakes, reflect on where our competitive advantages lie, adjust our risk management, and generally improve our processes to drive better results.

Excessive exposure to unhedged long cyclical names and a risk arbitrage position in NXPI accounted for much of the year’s negative

Bill Ackman (Trades, Portfolio), manager of Pershing Square Capital Management, disclosed last week that his fund introduced two new positions and boosted four positions during the fourth quarter of 2018.

Managing a portfolio of nine stocks, Ackman buys common shares of public companies and pushes for changes so that the market can realize the values of the companies. Further, the fund said it had a strong start to 2019,

Third Point’s sells outweigh its buys

Third Point manager Daniel Loeb (Trades, Portfolio) disclosed last week his top sell during fourth-quarter 2018 was United Technologies Corp. (UTX), a major holding of fellow activist investor Bill Ackman (Trades, Portfolio).

Managing a portfolio of 22 stocks, Loeb follows an event-driven, value-oriented investment style. The fund manager seeks situations in which a catalyst expects to unlock shareholder value. Despite this, Loeb’s sells outweighed his buys for the quarter: although the fund manager established one new holding in Cigna Corp. (CI), Loeb also sold out of Alibaba Group

United Technologies (NYSE:UTX) is a multi-industry conglomerate comprised of world-class franchises in elevators/escalators (Otis), jet engines and aerospace supply (Pratt and Whitney), HVACf (Carrier), fire/security, and refrigeration. United Technologies’ aerospace margins have been under pressure as Boeing and Airbus moved into the aftermarket, squeezing their supply base. Despite this risk, we believe the company is an attractive long-term investment opportunity at 14 times forward earnings. United Technologies has premier global franchises with attractive long-term growth potential and a high degree of visibility based on its substantial backlog (over seven years) of aerospace contracts.
