GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

PHI Inc provides helicopter transportation services to, from, and among offshore facilities for customers engaged in the oil and gas exploration, development, and production industry.

PHI Inc was incorporated in 1949. The Company and its subsidiaries is a provider of helicopter transportation services in the Gulf of Mexico. It provides transportation services to, from, and among offshore facilities engaged in the oil and gas exploration, development, and production industry, mainly in North America and to a lesser extent in West Africa and the Middle East. It also provides air medical transportation services for hospitals and medical programs, and aircraft maintenance services to third parties in North America and the Middle East. At December 31, 2013, it owned or operated 278 aircraft domestically and internationally, 168 of which were dedicated to Oil and Gas segment, 104 of which were dedicated to Air Medical segment, and 6 of which were dedicated to other operations. The Company operates in three business segments: Oil and Gas, Air Medical, and Technical Services. Oil and Gas segment headquartered in Lafayette, Louisiana, provides helicopter services mainly for the integrated and independent oil and gas production companies transporting personnel and equipment to offshore platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. Air Medical segment headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona provides air medical transportation services for hospitals and emergency service agencies in 18 states using approximately 95 aircraft at 72 separate locations. Air Medical segment operates mainly under the independent provider model and, to a lesser extent, under the traditional provider model. Under the independent provider model, it has no contracts and no fixed revenue stream, and competes for transport referrals on a daily basis with other independent operators in the area. Under the traditional provider model, it contracts directly with the hospital to provide their medical transportation services, with the contracts mainly awarded through competitive bidding. Technical Services segment provides helicopter repair and overhaul services for flight operations customers that own their aircraft. Costs associated with these services are mainly labor, and customers are generally billed at a percentage above cost. It also operates six aircraft for the National Science Foundation in Antarctica under Technical Services segment, mainly in the first and fourth quarters each year. Its customers include Shell Oil Company, BP America Production Company, ExxonMobil Production Co., ConocoPhillips Company and ENI Petroleum. The Company competes with two main and several small competitors operating in the Gulf of Mexico market. In the air medical market, it competes against national and regional firms. In addition, it competes against hospitals that operate their own helicopters and, in some cases, against ground ambulances as well. It is subject to various federal and state environmental laws and regulations.
