Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp is engaged in the computer-aided design, manufacturing, testing, packaging, and trading of integrated circuits and other semiconductor services. It also designs and manufactures semiconductor masks.

Since its inception in 2002, Semiconductor Manufacturing International has grown from nothing to become the largest foundry in China and one of the largest in the world. SMIC went public in the U.S. as an ADR in 2004. All of the firm's factories are in China, but SMIC is registered in the Cayman Islands. The company focuses primarily on providing outsourced manufacturing of logic chips.
