Average Sales per Sqft is a retail store’s average revenue for every foot of store space, including non-selling areas such as stock rooms or receiving areas. It tells us how efficient the retailer is with the use of sales space, allowing the retailer to make smarter merchandising, inventory, and sales decisions. A higher sales per square foot indicates more efficient operations and thus high profitability.

The formula of calculating Sales per Sqft is total in-store sales divided by selling area in square feet. When calculating a store’s Sales per Square Foot, the non-selling areas of the store, such as stock rooms or receiving areas, need to be excluded.

The difference between Average Sales per Sqft and Sales per Sqft that in the calculation of Average Sales per Square Foot, the non-selling areas of the store, such as stock rooms or receiving areas, need to be included.

Retailers can increase the average sales per square foot by improving the store layout, having a winning product assortment, optimizing prices and increasing per transaction value.
