Stifel Financial Corp is a financial services holding company that was founded in 1983. The company can trace its history back to 1890, when the predecessors firm Altheimer & Rawlings Investment Company was founded. The firm would rename itself first to Stifel Investment Company in 1917 and then to Stifel, Nicolaus Investment Company in 1923, opening a new branch office in Chicago by 1931. In 1958, the company would become a member of the New York Stock Exchange and begin a series of expansions to facilitate its growth soon after. From the 1960s onwards, the company would acquire Albert, Theis & Sons, Cruttenden, Podesta & Miller, Dempsey Tegeler, Altorfer, Podesta & Woolard, and Bacon Whipple. In 1983, the holding company Stifel Financial Corp would be created and become a publicly owned corporation soon after with a $1.44 million share offering. In 1987, the Stifel Financial Corp. would be listed listed on the New York Stock Exchange. The company has continued to utilize acquisitions and mergers to fuel its growth, including companies such as Rowland, Simon, Hanifen Imhoff, Legg Mason Capital Markets, Ryan Beck & Co., Butler Wick & Company, Sterne Agee, and Barclays U.S. Wealth Management, among others. The company today is still headquartered in St. Louis and provides a variety of securities brokerage, investment banking, trading, investment advisory, and related financial services through its wholly owned subsidiary companies. Stifel Financial Corp primarily provides its services to individuals, which along makes up almost half of its over 100k client base, and also caters to high net worth individuals, state or municipal government entities, corporations or other businesses, other pooled investment vehicles, charities, pension and profit sharing plans, banking institutions, and insurance companies, in order of decreasing accounts held. The company currently employs over 5000 employees and has total assets of over $32 billion. Stifel Financial Corp’s mutual funds offers over 200 fund families ranging from Aberdeen to Ziegler Lotsoff and also offers ETF offerings through its subsidiaries.
