MITSUBISHI UFJ FINANCIAL GROUP INC Profile

Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc. is a banking holding and financial services company that was formed in 2005, although it can trace its history back to the 19th century. In 1880, the Yokohama Specie Bank, later the Bank of Tokyo, was founded. That same year, the Mitsubishi Bank was also founded. In 1996, these two aforementioned banks would merge into one company. UFJ Holdings was formed out of a merger between the Sanwa Bank and Tokai Bank Toyo Trust and Banking, a subsidiary of Toyota Motor Corporation. The company would offer to join with the merged Mitsubishi bank in 2004 and the actual merger would occur in 2005. While the two core banking units of Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi and UFJ Bank would not merge during the 2005 merger of the parent companies, the two units would merge one year later to form the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, Ltd. At the time of its merger, Mitsubishi Tokyo Financial Group was one of the largest banks in Japan while UFJ Holdings, or United Financial of Japan Holdings, was the third major banking group in Japan. Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group operates through its subsidiary group companies, including NICOS Co., Trust and Banking Corporation, Securities Co., Securities International Plc, and Information Technology under the Mitsubishi UFJ name, among others, and other companies using their original names preserved from before the 2005 merger. The company’s business operations are split into segments, including the Integrated Retail Banking Business Group, Integrated Corporate Banking Business Group, Integrated Trust Assets Business Group, Integrated Global Business Group, and Global Markets segments. Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group is currently Japan’s largest financial group and the world’s second largest bank holding company with assets of over $2.5 trillion. The company is one of the main members of the Mitsubishi Group and is the second largest public company in Japan with over 80,000 employees.
