GuruFocus announces the addition of its latest guru, Zeke Ashton. Ashton is the managing partner of Centaur Capital Partners located in Dallas, Texas.

Ashton began his career as a financial software business consultant, but soon became enamored with the stock market and joined the Motley Fool as an investment analyst writer. In 2002, he founded Centaur Capital Partners, a private limited partnership, with only $1 million in capital. In 2005, his company launched the Tilson Dividend Fund (TILDX), a small mutual fund. Today, Ashton’s company has compounded at 16% per annum, and he manages $110 million.

Ashton’s investment approach includes a portfolio model with a concentration of his best ideas, along with a few smaller bets, typically a 20-stock model that is either long or short based. Most often he looks for businesses that are not cyclical or leveraged. He also prefers stocks that are not known for their fast rate of growth or bargain price.

Centaur Capital has had success with its risk management strategy. In 2008, it declined only 6.9 percent, compared to the 37-40 percent declines of the S&P and NASDAQ composite indexes. By the end of IQ09, the Centaur Value Fund had increased 134 percent, while the NASDAQ composite returned 15 percent and the S&P 500 index -0.3 percent.

These are Ashton’s top holdings as of 12/31/2010.
