My favorite John Templeton story relates to the investment he made in 1939 when the second world war began in Europe.
At that time pessimism was rampant (obviously). Templeton borrowed $10,000 to buy shares in 104 companies selling for less than $1 per share. Many of those companies were facing what seemed to be potential for bankruptcy.
Four years later only four of those companies had gone bankrupt and Templeton sold his basket of stocks for $40,000.
