Edward S. Lampert, the hedge-fund manager who engineered Kmart's takeover of Sears, Roebuck and Co., won't be needing any blue-light specials.

Lampert's audacious retail bet made him the best-paid hedge-fund manager in the nation in 2004 with a $1.02 billion salary, according to a survey released Friday.

That's the highest pay recorded in the survey's four-year history. The survey is conducted by Alpha, a magazine about hedge funds published by Institutional Investor.

The 42-year-old Lampert, who serves as Sears' chairman while he runs hedge fund ESL Investments Inc. in Connecticut, more than doubled his 2003 earnings of $420 million, and jumped to the No. 1 ranking from No. 4 in 2003.
