On May 20, Savings and Loan operator Sovereign Bancorp, Inc. (SOV) completed its public offering of $1.9 billion of equity and debt to raise capital. First quarter profits doubled to $100.1 million or $0.20 a share compared to $48.1 million or $0.09 a share. In 2007, hefty $128.7 million company restructuring expenses ate into profits. First quarter provisions for loan losses totaled $135 million.
