David Williams is the manager of Columbia Value & Restructuring Fund. He has managed the fund since it opened in 1992. Over the past 15 years, his fund has gained more than 15% a year. Williams graduated from Yale University with a degree in art history.

David Williams makes long-term investments, typically contrarian in nature, and he sticks to his course through headwinds. He invests in deep value stocks but also in some growth stocks, when he can pick them up at the right price. The “restructuring” in the fund’s name refers to the aspiration to invest in stocks that may benefit from fundamental corporate change, including but not limited to mergers and acquisitions. Williams makes large commitments to particular sectors that he feels are under-valued. This can lead the fund’s performance to deviate significantly from the overall stock market.

David Williams invests heavily in energy and internationals. His largest holding is Petroleo Brasileiro SA (PBR). Five out of his top 10 holdings are energy companies. He owns 87 stocks in his $9 billion fund.
