The Japanese smartphone maker, Toshiba (TOSBF, Financial), has prepared all grounds to compete with the Android phones available in Japan as it has recently announced the release of a huge display oriented TT301 Tablet made exclusively for the Japanese masses. So, Toshiba seems not to worry about Android tablets getting a little smaller and missing out on the trend. Let’s dig deeper to undermine the attributes which makes the tablet competitive enough to tackle the popularity gained by Microsoft (MSFT, Financial) and Google (GOOG, Financial) smartphone offerings currently in its home turf.

The display features are spectacular

The new TT301 tablet has a gigantic 24-inch display. This really does sound truly awesome as no smartphone has been manufactured to date hosting such a huge display screen. In fact, this size is almost twice that of Microsoft’s Surface Pro 3 and more than three times that of a Nexus 7. Toshiba has named the TT301 tablet as the Shared Board, which is not designed for regular browsers, but is targeting the business folk aiming to collaborate a project together.

It runs on Android operating system, but there are some additional features that make the tablet far more exciting to be owned. If the TT301 tablet is connected to a computer through a HDMI cable or wirelessly using Miracast it could happily be used as a monitor or a television at home. This is an added benefit that will surely lure smartphone and tablet buyers down the road.

The TT301 tablet can also be imagined to be built into some imaginative, multi-room home-theatre system – the massive 1080 pixel display does make the tablet a bit unusual from normal tablets being bought in the market.

But the other specs of the tablet are also quite overwhelming. It hosts a 1GHz dual core processor with 1.5GB of RAM and has 16GB of internal memory. It weighs around 3.9 kgs because of its size and Wi-fi and Bluetooth connectivity.

The tablet would come with two 2W integrated speakers so that it could be used during presentations. But, with regard to the Android OS, it's preloaded with Android 4.2.1 but should get upgraded to the higher versions of Android sooner the better. Toshiba has also included the multi-tasking facility, but it is limited to only two apps at a time.

Looking ahead

In the face of intense competition, Toshiba is trying to make a place for itself through the display feature which looks to be the most lucrative point amongst all the features the tablet hosts. Though the pricing details are not very clear yet, only time will convey to what extent this tablet is able to create a storm in Japan for Toshiba in the days ahead.
