We invested in Waste Connections, Inc. (NYSE:WCN), a solid waste collection and disposal service, in 2009. At the time, revenues were $1.1 billion. Today, revenues have nearly doubled to $2.1 billion. The company enjoys a monopoly in the majority of the regions in which it operates due to high barriers to entry and avoidance of high-competition urban markets, and volumes are increasing through steady organic growth augmented by strategic acquisitions.
