U.S. Market Indexes Reach New Highs

New highs for the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 with technology stocks leading in the market Monday

U.S. market indexes were higher on Monday to start the week. For the day the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 18533.05 for a gain of 16.50 points or 0.09%. The S&P 500 was also higher, closing at 2166.89 for a gain of 5.15 points or 0.24%. Both the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 closed at new highs for the day. The Nasdaq Composite was also higher Monday, closing at 5055.78 for a gain of 26.19 points or 0.52%. The VIX Volatility Index was down for the day at 12.41 for a loss of -0.26 points or -2.05%.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains:

DuPont (DD, Financial) 1.34%

Home Depot (HD, Financial) 1.16%

Apple (AAPL, Financial) 1.06%

Goldman Sachs (GS, Financial) 1.05%

Boeing (BA, Financial) 0.79%

Stocks gained across the board Monday as a positive outlook for earnings and the economy continued. The leading economic report for the day included the Housing Market Index from the National Association of Homebuilders. The Index fell to 59 after being reported at 60 in June. The consensus for the month of July was 61.

Stocks actively trading for the day included Bank of America (BAC, Financial), Apple (AAPL, Financial) and Microsoft (MSFT, Financial).

The technology sector led the market higher on Monday with the Nasdaq Composite closing higher at 5055.78 and the Nasdaq 100 closing higher at 4619.68. In technology, the following stocks led gains for the day:

Seagate Technology PLC (STX, Financial) 4.33%

JD.com Inc ADR (JD, Financial) 3.41%

Liberty Media (LMCK, Financial) 2.75%

Liberty Global (LBTYB, Financial) 2.7%

Tesla Motors (TSLA, Financial) 2.65%

In a CNBC report Monday, Gordon Charlop of Rosenblatt Securities gave his insight on technology stocks and what might be expected from technology sector earnings this week.
