Debate and economic data help market finish higher on Tuesday

U.S. market indexes were higher on Tuesday. For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 18228.30 for a gain of 133.47 points, or 0.74%. The S&P 500 Index closed at 2159.93 for a gain of 13.83 points, or 0.64%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5305.71 for a gain of 48.22 points, or 0.92%. The VIX Volatility Index closed lower for the day at 13.05 for a loss of -1.45 points, or -10.00%.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average the following stocks led gains:

Microsoft (MSFT, Financial) 1.85%

IBM (IBM, Financial) 1.81%

Nike (NKE, Financial) 1.73%

Intel (INTC, Financial) 1.45%

American Express (AXP, Financial) 1.36%

On the economic calendar were the following reports: S&P Corelogic Case-Shiller HPI, PMI Services Flash and the Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Index. The S&P Corelogic Case-Shiller HPI remained steady with 0% gain. The PMI Services Flash increased to 51.9. The Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Index increased to 104.1.

U.S. stocks were higher Tuesday as the market digested comments from the presidential debate and investors favored Clinton.
