Election helps stocks gain for second week

U.S. market indexes were lower Friday.

For the day the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 18,867.93 for a loss of 35.89 points or 0.19%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,181.90 for a loss of 5.22 points or 0.24%. The Nasdaq Composite closed lower at 5,321.51 for a loss of 12.46 points or 0.23%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower for the day at 12.85 for a loss of 0.50 points or 3.75%.

For the week the leading large cap indexes were higher for a second week following positive post-election momentum. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.11% for the week. The S&P 500 Index gained 0.81%. The Nasdaq Composite gained 1.61%.

Friday’s market movers

Economic reports affecting trading on Friday included the Conference Board’s Leading Economic Index and the Baker Hughes Rig Count. The Conference Board’s Leading Economic Index gained 0.1% for the month, even with consensus. The Baker Hughes Rig Count report showed an increase of 28 new oil rigs in North America for the week. Oil prices were higher for the day, but uncertainty still remains over an OPEC agreement on production caps.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led losses:

Sectors leading losses for the day included health care and consumer staples. Technology stocks in the S&P 500 were also lower with a loss of -0.08%.

Small-cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,315.64 for a gain of 6.16 points or 0.47%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 803.00 for a gain of 3.57 points or 0.45%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 7,826.56 for a gain of 14.96 points or 0.19%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,207.33 for a gain of 36.49 points or 0.40%.

Other notable indexes

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,605.93 for a gain of 0.69 points or 0.04%; the S&P 100 Index at 963.13 for a loss of 2.49 points or 0.26%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,298.21 for a loss of 2.21 points or 0.17%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,210.99 for a loss of 2.73 points or 0.22%, and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 615.82 for a loss of 0.20 points or 0.03%.
