Indexes achieve milestones

U.S. market indexes were higher on Monday with the Dow Jones Industrial Average, Standard & Poor's 500 and Nasdaq Composite all reaching new highs.

For the day the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 18,956.69 for a gain of 88.76 points or 0.47%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,198.18 for a gain of 16.28 points or 0.75%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5,368.86 for a gain of 47.35 points or 0.89%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 12.42 for a loss of 0.43 points or 3.35%.

Monday’s market movers

Stocks gained on Monday with continued postelection momentum. The Chicago Fed National Activity Index was the market’s leading economic report for the day. The Index reported an improvement from -0.23 to -0.08.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, stocks leading gains included the following:

Top sectors for the broad market included energy, materials and utilities. Technology stocks were also higher. The S&P 500 technology sector gained 1.01% for the day.

Small-cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,322.23 for a gain of 6.59 points or 0.50%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 806.34 for a gain of 3.34 points or 0.42%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 7,872.93 for a gain of 46.37 points or 0.59%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,263.11 for a gain of 55.78 points or 0.61%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,616.68 for a loss of 10.75 points or 0.67%; the S&P 100 Index at 970.18 for a gain of 7.05 points or 0.73%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1307.61 for a gain of 9.40 points or 0.72%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1219.99 for a gain of 9.00 points or 0.74%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 621.42 for a gain of 5.60 points or 0.91%.
