US Market Indexes Reach New Highs on Friday

Indexes gain with positive momentum continuing in equities

All three of the U.S. market’s leading indexes reached new highs on Friday in a post-holiday trading day that ended at 1 p.m. (EST). For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 19,152.14 for a gain of 68.96 points or 0.36%. The Standrd & Poor's 500 closed at 2,213.35 for a gain of 8.63 points or 0.39%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5,398.92 for a gain of 18.24 points or 0.34%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower for the day at 12.34 for a loss of 0.09 points or 0.72%.

Friday’s market movers

Economic reports affecting trading on Friday included the following:

  • International Trade reported a $62.0 billion deficit, down from a revised $56.5 billion in August.
  • PMI Services Flash Index posted a decrease in November at 54.7, down from 54.8.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains:

Top sectors for the broad market were utilities and consumer staples. Technology was also higher with the S&P 500 technology sector gaining 0.42%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,640.81 for a gain of 5.24 points or 0.32%; the S&P 100 Index at 975.25 for a gain of 4.16 points or 0.43%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,318.55 for a gain of 5.11 points or 0.39%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1229.11 for a gain of 4.78 points or 0.39%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 626.43 for a gain of 4.14 points or 0.67%.
