U.S. market indexes were mostly higher on Wednesday with the Nasdaq Composite reaching a new high.

For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 20,054.34 for a loss of 35.95 points or 0.18%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,294.67 for a gain of 1.59 points or 0.07%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5,682.45 for a gain of 8.24 points or 0.15%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher for the day at 11.45 for a gain of 0.16 points or 1.42%.

Wednesday’s market movers

Economic reports affecting market trading on Wednesday included the following:

  • The Mortgage Bankers Association’s mortgage applications index increased by 2.3% for the week.
