U.S. market indexes were lower Monday.

For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 20,954.34 for a loss of 51.37 points or 0.24%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,375.31 for a loss of 7.81 points or 0.33%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5,849.17 for a loss of 21.58 points or 0.37%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher for the day at 11.24 for a gain of 0.28 points or 2.55%.

Monday’s market movers

The leading economic report affecting market trading on Monday was factory orders. which increased 1.2% in January.

Financial stocks led losses for the day. In the Dow Jones Industrial Average Travelers (TRV, Financial) was down 1.46% and JPMorgan (JPM, Financial) was lower by 0.95%.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,384.25 for a loss of 9.88 points or 0.71%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 843.33 for a loss of 6.05 points or 0.71%.
