US Market Indexes Lower as Investors Analyze Earnings Reports

U.S. market indexes were lower Tuesday.

For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 20,523.28 for a loss of 113.64 points or 0.55%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,342.19 for a loss of 6.82 points or 0.29%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5,849.47 for a loss of 7.32 points or 0.12%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 14.42 for a loss of 0.24 points or 1.64%.

Tuesday’s market movers

Disappointing earnings from companies including Disney (DIS, Financial), Macy’s (M, Financial) and Staples (SPLS, Financial) led to market losses. Bank of America (BAC, Financial) and Goldman Sachs (GS, Financial) also reported earnings Tuesday along with IBM (IBM, Financial). Bank of America reported a loss of 0.50% for the day, and Goldman Sachs was down 4.72%. IBM reported earnings after the closing bell, missing revenue estimates and beating earnings estimates by 3 cents.

Economic reports released on Tuesday included the following:

• Housing starts decreased to 1.215 million SAAR.
• Industrial production increased 0.5% for the month.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led losses:

• Goldman Sachs -4.72%.
• Johnson & Johnson (JNJ, Financial) -3.10%.
• American Express (AXP, Financial) -1.15%.
• Travelers (TRV, Financial) -0.96%.
• Merck (MRK, Financial) -0.84%.
• JPMorgan (JPM, Financial) -0.82%.

In the broad market, losses were led by health care stocks. Technology stocks were also lower for the day with the S&P 500 technology sector down -0.02%.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,361.89 for a gain of 0.71 points or 0.05%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 826.19 for a gain of 0.95 points or 0.12%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8,163.15 for a loss of 3.95 points or 0.05%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,532.52 for a gain of 6.37 points or 0.07%.
