Technology Leads Gains on Tuesday

U.S. market indexes were mostly flat on Tuesday with gains from technology stocks.

For the day the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 21,409.07 for a gain of 0.55 points or 0.01%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,425.53 for a loss of 1.90 points or 0.08%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,193.30 for a gain of 16.91 points or 0.27%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower for the day at 10.97 for a loss of 0.14 points or 1.26%.

Tuesday’s market movers

Political events affecting markets on Tuesday included the release of emails from President Donald Trump's son regarding meetings with Russians and a delayed Senate recess due to new legislation.

Economic reports released on Tuesday included the following:

  • The NFIB Small Business Optimism Index was reported at 103.6, a slight decrease from 104.5 and also below consensus of 104.5.
  • Wholesale inventories increased 0.4% for the month following a decrease of 0.4%.
