The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 21,784.78 for a loss of 22.86 points or 0.10%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,465.10 for a loss of 0.44% or 0.02%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,397.87 for a loss of 4.55 points or 0.07%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 11.56 for a loss of 0.07 points or 0.60%.
Thursday’s market movers
Financial and consumer discretionary stocks kept indexes lower for the day. Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:
- Jobless claims increased by 62,000 to 298,000.
- Productivity and costs were reported. Productivity increased to a seasonally adjusted annual growth rate of 1.5%. Unit labor costs increased to a seasonally adjusted annual growth rate of 0.2%.
In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led losses:
- Walt Disney (DIS, Financial) -4.48%.
- General Electric (GE, Financial) -3.61%.
- JPMorgan (JPM, Financial) -1.75%.
In the broad market, financial stocks led losses. Technology stocks gained for the day with the S&P 500 technology sector up 0.34%.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,398.67 for a loss of 3.52 points or 0.25%. The S&P 600 closed at 837.41 for a loss of 2.53 points or 0.30%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8,571.24 for a loss of 8.16 points or 0.10%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM closed at 9,353.37 for a loss of 56.00 points or 0.60%.
