US market indexes mostly lower

U.S. market indexes were mixed on Thursday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 22,203.48 for a gain of 45.30 points or 0.20%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,495.62 for a loss of 2.75 points or 0.11%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,429.08 for a loss of 31.10 points or 0.48%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 10.46 for a loss of 0.04 points or 0.38%.

Thursday’s market movers

The Dow Jones Industrial Average reported a new high on Thursday. Other U.S. market indexes were mostly lower with losses from consumer discretionary and technology.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The Consumer Price Index reported a 0.4% increase for the month and a 1.9% increase for the year.
  • Jobless claims decreased by 14,000 to 284,000.

The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8,701.95 for a loss of 10.85 points or 0.12%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,582.62 for a loss of 12.14 points or 0.13%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,746.67 for a loss of 1.81 points or 0.10%; the S&P 100 Index at 1,103.66 for a loss of 1.22 points or 0.11%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,476.10 for a loss of 1.61 points or 0.11%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,382.53 for a loss of 1.49 points or 0.11%; and the Dow Jones US Select Dividend Index at 665.97 for a gain of 1.16 points or 0.17%.
