U.S .market indexes were higher Tuesday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 22,830.68 for a gain of 69.61 points or 0.31%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,550.64 for a gain of 5.91 points or 0.23%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,587.25 for a gain of 7.52 points or 0.11%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 10.08 for a loss of 0.25 points or 2.42%.

Tuesday’s market movers

The Dow Jones reached a new high on Tuesday and moved closer to 23,000. The index was led by Walmart (WMT, Financial) with a 4.5% gain after the company reported at its investor day that it would continue to focus on its domestic stores and e-commerce. Stocks leading gains in the index for the day included the following:

The NFIB Small Business Optimism Index report was the main focus on the economic calendar. The Index decreased to 103.0 from 105.3.

In the broad market, utilities and consumer stocks led gains. Technology was also higher with the S&P 500 technology sector gaining 0.12%.

Small-cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,508.01 for a gain of 4.44 points or 0.30%. The S&P 600 closed at 912.50 for a gain of 1.78 points or 0.20%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,128.85 for a gain of 7.91 points or 0.09%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 10,077.28 for a gain of 48.95 points or 0.49%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index which closed at 1,818.58 for a gain of 5.41 points or 0.30%; the S&P 100 Index at 1,126.49 for a gain of 2.88 points or 0.26%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,513.96 for a gain of 3.47 points or 0.23%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,414.31 for a gain of 3.16 points or 0.22%; and the Dow Jones US Select Dividend Index at 678.36 for a gain of 4.19 points or 0.62%.
