Large-Cap Stocks Gain, Indexes Higher for the Week

Dow Jones and Nasdaq close at new highs

U.S. market indexes were higher on Friday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 22,871.72 for a gain of 30.71 points or 0.13%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,553.17 for a gain of 2.24 points or 0.09%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,605.80 for a gain of 14.29 points or 0.22%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower for the day at 9.62 for a loss of -0.29 points or -2.93%.

For the week, the Dow Jones gained 0.47%, the S&P 500 gained 0.17% and the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.24%.

Friday’s market movers

The Dow Jones and Nasdaq Composite reached new highs. Gains were helped by positive earnings reports. Bank of America (BAC, Financial) and Wells Fargo (WFC, Financial) both beat third-quarter earnings per share estimates.

Economic reports affecting market trading on Friday included the following:

  • The Consumer Price Index increased 0.5% for the month and 2.2% for the year.
  • Retail sales increased 1.6% for the month.
  • Business inventories increased 0.7% for the month.
  • The University of Michigan’s Consumer Sentiment Index increased to 101.1 from 95.1.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains:

American Express (AXP, Financial) 1.38%

Intel (INTC, Financial) 1.28%

Procter & Gamble (PG, Financial) 1.03%

In the broad market, materials and technology led gains. The S&P 500 materials sector gained 0.52% and the S&P 500 technology sector gained 0.47%.

Small-cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,502.66 for a loss of -2.51 points or -0.17%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 908.37 for a loss of -1.06 points or -0.12%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,093.50 for a loss of -21.08 points or -0.23%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 10,079.82 for a gain of 10.55 points or 0.10%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,818.82 for a loss of -0.91 points or -0.05%; the S&P 100 Index at 1,126.16 for a gain of 1.12 points or 0.10%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,514.89 for a gain of 0.89 points or 0.06%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,415.67 for a gain of 1.10 points or 0.08%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 680.60 for a loss of -0.60 points or -0.09%.
