US Market Indexes Gain on Wednesday

U.S. market indexes were higher on Wednesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 26,115.65 for a gain of 322.79 points or 1.25%. The S&P 500 Index closed at 2,802.56 for a gain of 26.14 points or 0.94%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,298.28 for a gain of 74.59 points or 1.03%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher for the day at 11.81 for a gain of 0.15 points or 1.29%.

Wednesday’s market movers

All three leading large-cap indexes closed at new highs on Wednesday, with the Dow Jones closing above 26,000. Technology and consumer staples led gains for the day.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The Mortgage Bankers Association’s mortgage applications index increased 4.1% for the week.
  • Industrial production increased 0.9%.
  • The National Association of Home Builders’ Housing Market Index was reported at 72.
  • The Beige Book continued to report "modest-to-moderate" growth.

The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,784.80 for a gain of 80.65 points or 0.83%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 10,476.31 for a gain of 86.35 points or 0.83%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,965.39 for a gain of 13.32 points or 0.68%; the S&P 100 Index at 1,243.08 for a gain of 11.29 points or 0.92%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,654.62 for a gain of 14.76 points or 0.90%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,550.63 for a gain of 13.95 points or 0.91%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 718.43 for a gain of 5.29 points or 0.74%.
