Large-Cap Stocks Mostly Lower on Monday, Tech Stocks Gain

U.S. market indexes were mostly lower Wednesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 25,178.61 for a loss of -157.13 points or -0.62%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,783.02 for a loss of -3.55 points or -0.13%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,588.32 for a gain of 27.51 points or 0.36%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 15.78 for a gain of 1.14 points or 7.79%.

Monday’s market movers

The Nasdaq reported a new closing high on Monday while other indexes were most lower. The S&P 500 technology sector gained 0.31% for the day.

The Treasury Budget was the only leading report on the economic calendar Monday. The Treasury Budget reported a -$215.2 billion deficit in February.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,601.06 for a gain of 3.91 points or 0.24%. The S&P 600 closed at 974.13 for a gain of 3.87 points or 0.40%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,974.43 for a gain of 19.39 points or 0.19%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 10,167.05 for a gain of 16.83 points or 0.17%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,951.24 for a gain of 2.18 points or 0.11%; the S&P 100 at 1,227.61 for a loss of -1.36 points or -0.11%; the Russell 3000 at 1,647.41 for a loss of -1.05 points or -0.06%; the Russell 1000 at 1,542.12 for a loss of -1.37 points or -0.09%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 695.27 for a loss of -1.25 points or -0.18%.
