US Market Indexes Close Higher Again on Tuesday

U.S. market indexes were higher on Tuesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 24,786.63 for a gain of 213.59 points or 0.87%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,706.39 for a gain of 28.55 points or 1.07%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,281.10 for a gain of 124.81 points or 1.74%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 15.30 for a loss of -1.26 points or -7.61%.

Tuesday’s market movers

More positive earnings reports and increasing valuations in the technology sector helped stocks to gain on Tuesday. Sectors leading gains for the day included technology, consumer discretionary and utilities. In the S&P 500, the technology sector reported a return of 1.93%.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • Housing starts increased to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.319 million.
  • Industrial production reported a 0.5% increase for March.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,580.19 for a gain of 17.16 points or 1.10%. The S&P 600 closed at 972.20 for a gain of 9.21 points or 0.96%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,804.17 for a gain of 117.20 points or 1.21%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 10,034.75 for a gain of 48.02 points or 0.48%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,917.83 for a gain of 14.98 points or 0.79%; the S&P 100 at 1,188.59 for a gain of 12.76 points or 1.09%; the Russell 3000 at 1,604.94 for a gain of 17.36 points or 1.09%; the Russell 1000 at 1,500.73 for a gain of 16.23 points or 1.09%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 696.92 for a gain of 4.57 points or 0.66%.
