US Market Indexes Close Lower on Friday

Dow Jones gains 0.4% for the week

U.S. market indexes were lower Friday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 24,462.94 for a loss of -201.95 or -0.82%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,670.14 for a loss of -22.99 points or -0.85%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,146.13 for a loss of -91.93 points or -1.27%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 16.83 with a gain of 0.87 points or 5.45%.

For the week, the Dow Jones gained 0.4%, the S&P 500 gained 0.5% and the Nasdaq Composite reported a return of 0.6%.

Friday’s market movers

Lower technology stocks and a weak outlook for Apple’s (AAPL, Financial) upcoming earnings contributed to the day’s losses. In the S&P 500, the consumer staples sector led losses with a return of -1.69%, followed by technology with a loss of -1.45%.

The Baker Hughes rig count was the only major economic report on the calendar Friday. The Baker Hughes rig count reported a decrease to 1,106.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,564.13 for a loss of -9.69 points or -0.62%. The S&P 600 closed at 961.76 for a loss of -6.05 points or -0.63%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,680.97 for a loss of -75.91 points or -0.78%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,993.48 for a loss of -45.31 points or -0.45%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,900.50 for a loss of -13.12 points or -0.69%; the S&P 100 at 1,170.45 for a loss of -11.44 points or -0.97%; the Russell 3000 at 1,584.38 for a loss of -12.88 points or -0.81%; the Russell 1000 at 1,481.18 for a loss of -12.28 points or -0.82%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 686.51 for a loss of -4.37 points or -0.63%.
