US Market Indexes Gain for the Week

S&P 500 gains 2.9% in November

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 25,538.46 on Friday with a gain of 199.62 points or 0.79%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,760.16 for a gain of 22.40 points or 0.82%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,330.54 for a gain of 57.45 points or 0.79%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 18.07 with a loss of 0.72 points or -3.83%.

For the week, the Nasdaq Composite gained 4.3%, the Dow Jones gained 4% and the S&P 500 gained 3.7%.

For the month, the S&P 500 gained 2.9%, the Dow Jones gained 2.8% and the Nasdaq Composite gained 2.4%.

For the year, the Nasdaq is leading gains with a return of 4.62%, the S&P 500 has a gain of 2.39% and the Dow Jones has a gain of 2.38%.

Friday’s market movers

U.S. market indexes closed higher Friday, ending the last day of the month positive. Oil prices were lower, but investors had a positive outlook on trade with the G20 Summit and China trade negotiation meeting over the weekend. In the S&P 500, health care led gains and energy led losses.

The Baker Hughes North American rig count was the only major report on the economic calendar Friday. The rig count decreased to 1,275 from 1,283.

In small caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,533.27 for a gain of 7.88 points or 0.52%. The S&P 600 closed at 962.95 for a gain of 6.32 points or 0.66%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9541.27 for a gain of 48.91 points or 0.52%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,744.01 for a gain of 71.41 points or 0.74%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,878.65 for a gain of 11.91 points or 0.64%; the S&P 100 at 1,225.19 for a gain of 11.49 points or 0.95%; the Russell 3000 at 1,625.99 for a gain of 12.85 points or 0.80%; the Russell 1000 at 1,525.56 for a gain of 12.38 points or 0.82%; the Wilshire 5000 at 28,448.87 for a gain of 214.59 points or 0.76%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 697.23 for a gain of 4.86 points or 0.70%.
