US Market Indexes End Flat on Friday

S&P 500 down 7.79% for the year

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 23,062.40 on Friday with a loss of 76.42 points or -0.33%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,485.74 for a loss of 3.09 points or -0.12%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,584.52 for a gain of 5.03 points or 0.08%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 28.44 for a loss of 1.52 points or -5.07%.

Friday's market movers

U.S. market indexes ended flat on Friday as the government remained partially shut down. Congress is expected to reconvene on Dec. 31 with further discussions on President Trump's demands for funding a border wall. For the year, the S&P 500 now has a -7.79% return. Stocks have only one trading day left in 2018 with a regular 4 p.m. Eastern close on Monday.

Treasuries have been slightly decreasing in recent trading with the 10-year Treasury yield at approximately 2.74%. Bond markets will close early Monday at 2 p.m. Eastern.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • Pending home sales decreased 0.7% in November and -7.7% annually.
  • The Baker Hughes North American rig count decreased to 1,153 from 1,211.

In small caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,338.75 for a gain of 6.93 points or 0.52%. The S&P 600 closed at 840.10 for a gain of 4.73 points or 0.57%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8,323.75 for a gain of 27.67 points or 0.33%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 8,524.80 for a gain of 18.06 points or 0.21%.
