US Market Indexes Close Mostly Flat Friday

S&P 500 has a year-to-date gain of 8%

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 25,106.33 on Friday with a loss of 63.20 points or -0.25%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,707.88 for a gain of 1.83 points or 0.07%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,298.20 for a gain of 9.85 points or 0.14%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 15.74 for a loss of 0.63 points or -3.85%.

Friday’s market movers

Downbeat global growth expectations and international trade with China continued to worry equity market investors Friday. On Thursday, the Trump administration reported it was far from a deal with China and had no plans for Trump and Xi to meet before the March 1 deadline. On Friday, it was also reported the Trump Administration would sign an order keeping Chinese telecom equipment from working on U.S. wireless networks. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite gained 0.07% and 0.14% respectively while the Dow Jones finished down 0.25%.

For the week, the Nasdaq gained 0.32%, the Dow Jones gained 0.30% and the S&P 500 was up 0.10%. For the year, the Nasdaq leads with a gain of 10%, the S&P 500 has a gain of 8% and the Dow Jones is up 7.8%.

The Baker Hughes North American oil rig count was the only major report on the economic calendar Friday. The rig count increased to 1,289 from 1,288.

In small caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,506.40 for a gain of 0.77 points or 0.05%. The S&P 600 closed at 934.59 for a loss of 0.87 points or -0.09%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,490.71 for a gain of 21.47 points or 0.23%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,542.00 for a loss of 39.36 points or -0.41%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,852.45 for a loss of 1.95 points or -0.11%; the S&P 100 at 1,190.16 for a loss of 0.67 points or -0.06%; the Russell 3000 at 1,601.14 for a gain of 1.17 points or 0.07%; the Russell 1000 at 1,502.46 for a gain of 1.12 points or 0.07%; the Wilshire 5000 at 28,056.58 for a gain of 17.96 points or 0.06%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 682.95 for a gain of 0.83 points or 0.12%.
