The Company provides semiconductor solutions for the enterprise, telecom and consumer/small medium business (SMB) markets. It designs, develops, markets and supports high-performance low power integrated circuits (ICs), which are essential for the processing, transporting and storing of information worldwide. The Company's business had two reporting units, computing and Connectivity (formerly referred to as 'Process' and 'Transport', respectively).Under computing unit, the Company is continuing to develop products based on the Power Architecture. This standard processor architecture, developed by IBM, is the architecture within the communications market for high-performance embedded systems. Many of its customers' products require embedded processing solutions for managing control plane and data plane functionality. The Company's Connectivity technology product's historical focus has been on the SONET/SDH optical telecommunications infrastructure where it is vendor. Currently, its connectivity products sell into both the telecom/service provider and datacom/data center markets. In the service provider end market, emerging metro Ethernet and residential triple play applications such as internet protocol television ('IPTV') and OTN deployments are driving substantial investments in optical infrastructure. The Company utilizes its technological and design competencies to solve the problems of high-speed analog, digital and mixed-signal circuit designs, high performance processors that combine to provide many essential products for the transporting and processing of information worldwide. The Company mainly competes against companies such as Broadcom, PMC-Sierra, Cortina and Vitesse. In the embedded computing communications IC market, it competes with technology companies such as Freescale Semiconductor, Cavium and Intel. .
