Alliance Resource Partners LP is a diversified producer and marketer of coal to United States utilities and industrial users. It operates ten underground mining complexes in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland and West Virginia.

Alliance Resource Partners LP was formed in May 1999. It has completed its initial public offering on August 19, 1999. The Company is a diversified producer and marketer of coal to United States utilities and industrial users. It operates ten underground mining complexes in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland and West Virginia. The Company is also constructing a new mine in southern Indiana and operates a coal loading terminal on the Ohio River at Mt. Vernon, Indiana. Its mining activities are conducted in three geographic regions commonly referred to in the coal industry as the Illinois Basin, Central Appalachian and Northern Appalachian regions. The company operates in five reportable segments; the Illinois Basin, Central Appalachia, Northern Appalachia, White Oak and Other and Corporate. Its Illinois Basin reportable segment is comprised of multiple operating segments, including Webster County Coal's Dotiki mining complex, Gibson County Coal's mining complex, which includes the Gibson North mine and Gibson South project, Hopkins County Coal's Elk Creek mining complex, White County Coal's Pattiki mining complex, Warrior's mining complex, Sebree Mining's mining complex, which includes the Onton mine, Steamport and certain Sebree Reserves, River View's mining complex, CR Services, and certain properties of Alliance Resource Properties, ARP Sebree and ARP Sebree South, LLC. Its Central Appalachian reportable segment is comprised of two operating segments, the MC Mining and Pontiki mining complexes. Its Northern Appalachian reportable segment is comprised of multiple operating segments, including the Mettiki mining complex, the Tunnel Ridge mining complex and the Penn Ridge property. Its White Oak reportable segment is comprised of two operating segments, WOR Processing and WOR Properties. Its Other and Corporate reportable segment includes marketing and administrative expenses, Alliance Service, Inc. and Matrix Group and ASI's ownership of aircraft, the Mt. Vernon dock activities, coal brokerage activity, its equity investment in MAC, and certain activities of Alliance Resource Properties. Its customers are Louisville Gas and Electric Company and Tennessee Valley Authority. The Company competes with coal price, coal quality, including sulfur and heat content, transportation costs from the mine to the customer and the reliability of supply. Its principal competitors include Alpha Natural Resources, Inc., Arch Coal, Inc., CONSOL Energy, Inc., Foresight Energy LLC, James River Coal Company, Murray Energy, Inc., Patriot Coal Corp., and Peabody Energy Corp. The Company are subject to numerous and comprehensive federal, state and local laws and regulations affecting the coal mining industry, including laws and regulations pertaining to employee health and safety, permitting and licensing requirements, air and water quality standards, plant and wildlife protection, reclamation and restoration of mining properties after mining is comple
