Business Description

AngloGold Ashanti Limited was incorporated in the Republic of South Africa in 1944 under the name of Vaal Reefs Exploration and Mining Company Limited. It is a global gold company with a portfolio of long-life, relatively low-cost assets and differing orebody types in key gold producing regions. The Company has more than 20 operations located in approximately 10 countries- Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Ghana, Guinea, Mali, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania and the United States of America, and are supported by extensive exploration activities. For the year ended December 31, 2009, the Company had an attributable production of approximately 5 million ounces of gold. Gold accounts for approximately 96 percent of the Company's revenue from product sales. The balance of product sales is derived from sales of silver, uranium oxide and sulfuric acid. It competes with mining and other companies on a global basis to attract and retain key human resources at all levels with appropriate technical skills and operating and managerial experience necessary to continue to operate its business. It competes with all companies in South Africa to attract and retain a small but growing pool of HDSAs with the necessary skills and experience. The Company's Gold mining operations are subject to a number of industry-specific health and safety laws and regulations depending upon the jurisdiction in which they are located. These laws and regulations are formulated to improve and to protect the safety and health of employees.
