American Water Works Co Inc provides water and wastewater services to residential, commercial and industrial customers in the United States and Canada. It operates in two segments; Regulated Businesses and Market-Based Operations.

American Water Works Co Inc a Delaware Corporation, was founded in 1886 as the American Water Works & Guarantee Company, for the purposes of building and purchasing water systems in McKeesport, Pennsylvania. In 1935, the Company was reorganized under its current name. The Company's business involves the ownership of subsidiaries that provide water and wastewater utility services to residential, commercial, industrial and other customers, including sale for resale and public authority customers. The Company's market-based business comprises of four operating segments. The Market-Based Operations segment is comprised of market-based businesses that provide a broad range of water and wastewater services and products including homeowner water and sewer line maintenance services, water and wastewater facility operations and maintenance services and products for cleansing water and wastewater and wastewater residuals management services. Its Market-Based Operations include four lines of business: Contract Operations Group, which enters into contracts to operate and maintain water and wastewater facilities mainly for the United States military, municipalities, and the food and beverage industry; Homeowner Services Group, which provides services to domestic homeowners and smaller commercial establishments to protect against the cost of repairing broken or leaking water pipes and clogged or blocked sewer pipes inside and outside their accommodations; and Terratec Environmental Ltd., which it refer to as Terratec, which provides biosolids management, transport and disposal services to municipal and industrial customers, keystone which provides water sourcing, transfer prices, pipeline construction and water storage solutions. The Company's investor-owned competitors, when pursuing acquisitions, based on a comparison of operating revenues and population served, are Aqua America Inc., United Water, American States Water Co. and California Water Services Group. The Company's water and wastewater operations are subject to United States federal, state and local laws and regulations.

The second best performer was American Water Works Co. (NYSE:AWK) which climbed over 13 percent and added 23 basis points of performance to the Fund. The stock was clearly helped by being in the right sector, as all investors flocked toward defensive names during the quarter. American Water Works was specifically helped by a slightly better than expected earnings announcement buoyed by better cost controls and margin improvement.
