Berkshire Bancorp, Inc. is a Delaware corporation. It is a bank holding company registered under the Bank Holding Company Act of 1956. The Company's principal activity is the ownership and management of its indirect wholly-owned subsidiary, The Berkshire Bank , a New York State chartered commercial bank. The Bank's principal business consists of gathering deposits from the general public and investing those deposits primarily in loans, debt obligations issued by the U.S. Government and its agencies, debt obligations of business corporations, and mortgage-backed securities. The Bank currently operates from seven deposit-taking offices in New York City, four deposit-taking offices in Orange and Sullivan Counties, New York and one deposit taking office in Teaneck, NJ. The Bank draws its customers principally from the New York City metropolitan area and the Villages of Goshen and Harriman, New York and their surrounding communities, representing most of Orange County, New York. The Bank's principal competitors for deposits are other commercial banks, savings banks, savings and loan associations and credit unions in the Bank's market areas, as well as money market mutual funds, insurance companies, securities brokerage firms and other financial institutions, many of which are substantially larger in size than the Bank. The Company is a bank holding company under federal law and registered as such with the Federal Reserve.
