BHP Billiton was formed through the merger of two mining companies, BHP and Billiton which were founded in the mid-1800s. The firms merged in 2001. Broken Hill Proprietary's (BHP) history began in a silver, lead and zinc mine in Broken Hill, Australia. Incorporated in 1885, BHP engaged in the discovery, development, production and marketing of iron ore, copper, oil and gas, diamonds, silver, lead, zinc and a range of other natural resources.BHP Billiton is a producer of major commodities including aluminum, coal, copper, iron ore, manganese, nickel, silver and uranium and have substantial interests in oil and gas. The headquarters of BHP Billiton Limited, and the global headquarters of the combined BHP Billiton Group, are located in Melbourne, Australia. BHP Billiton Plc is located in London, United Kingdom. Both companies have identical Boards of Directors and are run by a single management team.
