Craft Brewers Alliance, Inc. was formed in 1981. It is an independent craft brewing company. It brews craft beers in four company-owned breweries located in Portland, Oregon; the Seattle suburb of Woodinville, Washington; Portsmouth, New Hampshire; and Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. Additionally, it owns and operates two small breweries, primarily used for small batch production brews, in Portland, Oregon and Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The Company distributes beers to retailers through independent wholesalers that are aligned with the Anheuser-Busch, LLC (A-B) network. It operates in two segments: Beer Related operations and Pubs operations. Beer Related operations include the brewing and sale of craft beers and cider from its six breweries, both domestically and internationally. Pubs operations primarily include its five pubs, four of which are located adjacent to its Beer Related operations, as well as other merchandise sales, and sales of its beers directly to customers. Its brand portfolio comprises the Kona Brewing Company, Widmer Brothers Brewing, Redhook Brewery, Omission Beer and Square Mile Cider Company brand families. The Company produces specialty craft beers and ciders using traditional brewing methods. It brews beers using hops, malted barley, wheat, rye and other natural traditional and nontraditional ingredients. It currently purchases a significant portion of its malted barley from two suppliers and its premium-quality select hops, mostly grown in the Pacific Northwest, from competitive sources. It also periodically purchases small lots of hops from international sources, such as New Zealand and Western Europe, which it uses to achieve a special hop character in certain beers. The Company's competitor brands include Heineken, Corona Extra and Guinness. The Company's business is highly regulated at federal, state and local levels.
