Business Description

Caterpillar Inc. was originally organized as Caterpillar Tractor Co. in 1925 in the State of California. In 1986, the Inc. in Company reorganized as Caterpillar the State of Delaware. , Caterpillar is a manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines, industrial gas turbines and diesel-electric locomotives. The company is also a services provider through Caterpillar Financial Services Corporation (Cat Financial), Caterpillar Remanufacturing Services, Caterpillar Logistics Inc. (Cat Logistics) and Progress Rail Services Corporation (Progress Rail). Caterpillar is also a U.S. exporter. Through a global network of independent dealers and direct sales of certain products, Caterpillar builds long-term relationships with customers around the world. In 2010, it announced a revised strategy and reorganization of its business into strategic business units. It has different business segments which include Machinery and Power Systems and Financial products segments. It's Machinery and Power systems segment represents the aggregate total of Construction Industries, Resource Industries, Power Systems and All Other segments and related corporate items and eliminations. Its Construction Industries segment is primarily responsible for supporting customers using machinery in infrastructure and building construction applications; The Resource Industries segment is primarily responsible for supporting customers using machinery in mine and quarry applications; its Power Systems segment is primarily responsible for supporting customers using reciprocating engines, turbines and related parts across industries serving electric power, industrial, petroleum and marine applications as well as rail-related businesses; and Financial Products, which consists mainly of Caterpillar Financial Services Corporation (Cat Financial), Caterpillar Insurance Holdings, Inc. (Cat Insurance) and their respective subsidiaries. Cat Financial provides a wide range of financing alternatives to customers and dealers for Caterpillar machinery and engines, Solar gas turbines as well as other equipment and marine vessels. Cat Financial also extends loans to customers and dealers. Cat Insurance provides various forms of insurance to customers and dealers to help support the purchase and lease of its equipment. The global competitors of the Company include, but are not limited to, Komatsu Ltd., Volvo Construction Equipment (part of the Volvo Group AB), CNH Global N.V., Deere & Co., Hitachi Construction Machinery Co., Terex Corporation, J.C. Bamford Ltd. (JCB) and Doosan Infracore Co., Ltd. The products are sold mainly under the brands 'Caterpillar,' 'CAT,' design versions of 'CAT' and 'Caterpillar,' 'Solar Turbines,' 'MaK,' 'Perkins,' 'FG Wilson,' 'Olympian' and 'Progress Rail.' The Company is regulated by federal, state and international environmental laws governing its use, transport and disposal of substances and control of emissions.
