Chimera Investment Corporation was organized in Maryland on June 1, 2007. The Company commenced operations on November 21, 2007 when it completed its initial public offering. It operates as a specialty finance company that invests in residential mortgage backed securities, or RMBS, residential mortgage loans, real estate-related securities and various other asset classes. It has elected to be taxed as a real estate investment trust, or REIT, for federal income tax purposes. The Company's objective is to provide attractive risk-adjusted returns to its investors over the long-term, mainly through dividends and secondarily through capital appreciation. It intends to achieve this objective by investing in a class of financial assets to construct an investment portfolio that is designed to achieve attractive risk-adjusted returns and that is structured to comply with the various federal income tax requirements for REIT status. Since it commenced operations in November 2007, it has focused its investment activities on acquiring non-Agency RMBS and on purchasing residential mortgage loans that have been originated by select high-quality originators, including the retail lending operations of commercial banks.
