CMS Energy Corp was formed as a corporation in Michigan in 1987 and is an energy company operating primarily in Michigan. The Company through its subsidiaries and equity investments is engaged in independent power production and owns power generation facilities fueled by natural gas and biomass. The Company manages its businesses by the nature of services each provides, and operates principally in three business segments: electric utility, gas utility, and enterprises, its non-utility operations and investments. Consumer's electric utility operations include the generation, purchase, distribution, and sale of electricity. Consumer's electric utility customer base consists of a mix of primarily residential, commercial, and diversified industrial customers in Michigan's Lower Peninsula. Consumer's gas utility operations include the purchase, transmission, storage, distribution, and sale of natural gas.
