GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Curtiss-Wright Corporation, a Delaware corporation was incorporated in 1929. The Company is a manufacturing and service company that designs, manufactures, and overhauls precision components and systems and provides highly engineered products and services to the aerospace, defense, automotive, shipbuilding, processing, oil, petrochemical, agricultural equipment, railroad, power generation, security, and metalworking industries. The Company's core competence is to provide advanced technologies for customers operating in harsh environments. Its products and services include critical-function pumps, valves, motors, generators, and electronics; aircraft flight controls, landing systems, ordnance handling, stabilization and utility actuation systems; as well as metallurgical enhancement of highly stressed components. It competes globally based on technology and pricing; however, significant engineering expertise is a limiting factor to competition, particularly in the U.S. government market. The Company operates through three segments: Flow Control, Controls, and Surface Technologies. Its principal manufacturing facilities are located in the United States in New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Texas, and internationally in Canada and the United Kingdom. The Company's Flow Control segment mainly designs, manufactures, and distributes highly engineered, critical-function products including valves, pumps, motors, generators, instrumentation, and control electronics. These products manage the flow of liquids and gases, generate power, provide electronic operating systems, and monitor critical functions. This segment's main markets are naval defense, commercial power generation, oil and gas, and general industrial. The segment operates through four operating divisions: Electro-Mechanical Systems, Nuclear Group, Oil and Gas Systems, and Marine and Power Products. The Controls segment designs, develops, manufactures, and maintains mechanical actuation and drive systems, specialized sensors, motors and electronic controller units, and mission-critical embedded computing components and control systems. This segment is managed through four operating divisions: Defense Solution, Flight Systems, Avionics and Industrial, and Integrated Sensing. The Surface Technologies segment provides technical services to enhance the performance and durability, extend the life, and prevent premature fatigue and failure on customer-supplied metal components. The segment provides four primary technical services on highly stressed, critical function components: shot peening, laser peening, specialty coatings, and analytical services. The Company is subject to federal, state, local, and foreign laws, regulations, and ordinances that govern activities or operations that might have adverse environmental effects, such as discharges to air and water.
