Guru Investment Theses on Deckers Outdoor Corporation

Baron Funds Comments on Deckers Outdoor Corporation - May 24, 2012

From Baron Funds' first quarter letter: Shares of Deckers Outdoor Corporation (DECK) declined when the company issued guidance that was below Street expectations. Deckers, the manufacturer of UGG boots, continues to face severe headwinds from the significant increase in the cost of sheepskin and one of the warmest winters on record. We believe sheepskin prices are peaking and will decline in 2013, giving a boost to 2013 earnings. We also believe weather patterns will eventually revert to the mean. (Laird Bieger)

Business Description

Deckers Outdoor Corporation was incorporated in 1975 under the laws of the State of California and, in 1993, reincorporated under the laws of the State of Delaware. It is a designer, producer, marketer, and brand manager of innovative, high-quality footwear and accessories. Its footwear is distinctive and appeals broadly to men, women and children. The Company sells its products, including accessories such as handbags, headwear, and outerwear, through quality domestic retailers and international distributors and directly to end-user consumers, both domestically and internationally, through its websites, call centers, retail concept stores and retail outlet stores. It seeks to differentiate its brands and products by offering diverse lines that emphasize authenticity, functionality, quality and comfort and products tailored to a variety of activities, seasons and demographic groups. Virtually all of its products are manufactured by independent contractors outside of the United States (US). Its continued growth will depend upon the broadening of its products offered under each brand, expanding domestic and international distribution, and developing or acquiring new brands. The Company markets its products mainly under three proprietary brands: UGG; Teva; and Sanuk. UGG Australia is its luxury comfort brand and the category creator for luxury sheepskin footwear. The UGG brand has enjoyed several years of strong growth and positive consumer reception, driven by consistent introductions of new styles, introductions of UGG products in the fall and spring seasons and strategic geographic expansion of its distribution. It carefully manage the distribution of its UGG products within high-end specialty and department store retailers in order to reach its target consumers, preserve the UGG brand's retail channel positioning and maintain the UGG brand's position as a mid- to upper-price luxury brand. Teva is its outdoor performance and lifestyle brand and pioneer of the sport sandal market. The Company has expanded the Teva product line over time to include open and closed-toe outdoor lifestyle footwear, as well as additional outdoor performance footwear, including multi-sport shoes, light hiking shoes, amphibious footwear, and rugged outdoor travel shoes. In 2005, as a response to the massive amount of waste produced by the footwear industry, the Simple brand launched a new collection of sustainable footwear called Green Toe(r). Green Toe represents a revolutionary shift in thinking about footwear by building a shoe from the inside out using sustainable materials and processes. Sanuk is action sport footwear brand rooted in the surf community. The Sanuk brand's offerings include the patented SIDEWALK SURFERS shoe which effectively introduced the deconstructed footwear movement, the Fraid Not sandal collection, and the Yoga Mat sandal made from yoga mat material. In addition to its main brands, its newest brands include TSUBO(r), a line of h
