FirstEnergy Corp. was organized under the laws of the State of Ohio in 1996. The Company's business is the holding, directly or indirectly, of all of the outstanding common stock of its principal subsidiaries. It includes one of the nation's investor-owned electric systems and a diverse generating fleet with a total capacity of more than 17,500 megawatts. It is a diversified energy company dedicated to safety, reliability and operational excellence. The Company's 10 regulated distribution companies form one of the nation's investor-owned electric systems, based on serving nearly 6 million customers in the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic regions. Stretching from the Ohio-Indiana border to the New Jersey shore, the companies operate infrastructure of more than 194,000 miles of distribution lines and are dedicated to providing customers with safe, reliable and responsive service. It generating fleet produces approximately 100 million megawatt-hours of electricity annually from a fleet of non-emitting nuclear, scrubbed coal, natural gas, and pumped-storage hydro plants. The Company's operations include 20,000 miles of high-voltage lines and three regional transmission operation centers. Effective June 1, 2011, all of its transmission facilities operate as part of PJM Interconnection, LLC. The Regulated Distribution segment distributes electricity through the Company's ten utility operating companies, serving approximately six million customers within 65,000 square miles of Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey and New York. The Regulated Transmission segment transmits electricity through transmission facilities owned and operated by ATSI, TrAIL, and certain of its utilities "JCP&L, ME, PN, MP, PE and WP" and the regulatory asset associated with the abandoned PATH project. The Competitive Energy Services segment, through FES and AE Supply, supplies electricity to end-use customers through retail and wholesale arrangements. The Company purchase and sell power at the wholesale level under market-based rate tariffs authorized by FERC. The Company's operations are subject to extensive federal, state and local environmental statutes, rules and regulations.
