GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Baron Funds Comments on Flotek Industries - Mar 16, 2017

Flotek Industries, Inc. (NYSE:FTK) supplies chemical additives to the global oil and gas industry. It has a proprietary product (CnF) that helps increase oil and gas shale well productivity. Shares fell in the fourth quarter following a short seller’s assertion that independent consultant studies commissioned by Flotek were based on incomplete data and failed to consider key variables. After incorporating additional data, the consultant confirmed its conclusion that CnF improves well productivity. We expect shares to rebound as Flotek proves demand for CnF remains solid.

Baron Funds Comments on Flotek Industries - Jan 20, 2017

Flotek Industries, Inc. (NYSE:FTK) is primarily a supplier of chemical additives to the global oil & gas industry with some other ancillary oilfield service operations. The company has a proprietary product dubbed “complex nano-fluid (CnF)” that is proving to be extremely effective at increasing oil & gas shale well productivity. The company’s shares fell in the quarter following the assertion by a short-seller that independent consultant studies commissioned by Flotek earlier in 2016 were based on incomplete data and therefore the short-seller questioned the efficacy of the CnF product. In response to these allegations, the independent consultants referenced above later incorporated additional data and still reiterated their conclusions about the positive impact of CnF on customer well productivity. We expect Flotek’s shares to rebound as the company demonstrates that customer demand for CnF remains strong.

Baron Funds Comments on Flotek Industries - Aug 10, 2016

Flotek Industries, Inc. (NYSE:FTK), a manufacturer of specialty chemicals primarily for the oilfield service sector, was added to in the quarter. The company has been a long-term holding in the Fund but we increased the position size as oil recovered and the company’s prospects improved. We are very excited about the growth the company is showing, especially in the Permian Basin in Western Texas. We believe the company’s earnings are depressed today but will recover in time and when that happens, the stock will be worth significantly more than it is today.

Baron Funds Comments on Flotek Industries Inc. - Nov 10, 2015

Flotek Industries, Inc. (NYSE:FTK) is primarily a supplier of chemical additives to the global oil & gas industry with some ancillary oilfield service operations. The company has a proprietary product dubbed “complex nano-fluid (CnF)” that is proving to be extremely effective at increasing oil & gas shale well productivity. The company’s shares rebounded in the third quarter following stronger-than-expected results in the second quarter that were principally driven by CnF sales and margins. Given the recent volatility in the energy markets we exited the position in the quarter in order to reallocate capital towards higher conviction ideas. We will continue to monitor developments at the company going forward.
